PRESIDENTS REPORT Presidents Report: Thank you to Margot for running Senate in Heidis absence, while she was at DREAM conference in Chicago (it was an inspiring conference, especially for equity, and sessions included student presenters from across the country). Heidi shares hiring practices from Pierce College. She and Kim DArcy have developed equity-minded New Faculty Orientation materials (also shared). Teaching Innovation Coordinator position not finalized (still working on JD)deadline of 3/15 may be extended for that position. Launch of ReOrg Inquiry (will close next weekso far only 18 responses); general questions/comments have been passed to Jennie M. and Tram V. Please email DEIAA division recommendations to Heidi (last meeting Senators were asked to collect)email to Christie by 3/7. Retirement of Valerie S (Heidi shares personal story of working with Valerie and the role she has played in helping faculty migrate online, especially during pandemic). Vets Program on 2/24 was a huge success and they plan to do it more often! Congratulations to all new tenured faculty (just announced at BoT), Heidi reads each name: Austin Beahm, Geography Instructor Bryan Carrillo, Mathematics Instructor Jennifer Czerniawski, Psychology Instructor Ari Grayson, Architectural Drafting Instructor Erin Long, Counselor Terry Lopez, Biology Instructor Carolyn Neill, Nursing Instructor Caroline Paltin, Human Services Instructor Erika Zemanek, English Instructor CONSTITUENCY GROUP REPORTS Faculty Association The negotiating team has met, and will be sending out a survey. Student Government March Spring Carnival Club Rush 3/14-15, ASG members are going to a conference in DC over spring break and recently met with Dr Stern to prepare (ASG President also addressed bathroom maintenance and need for better campus food options with Dr Stern at the meeting). Elections close 3/13. ASG voted on $3 increase in Student Health Fees (to $26 in fall/spring) yesterday. ASG discussed options for the P/NP grading option change (presented options of beginning, middle or end of semester): 71.43% chose end of semester for P/NP date (as opposed to beginning or middle)Exec asked for clarification on end of semester2 3 weeks before, and perhaps 75% deadline would be amenablemore discussion will ensue. Classified Staff Caring Campusambassadors have been selected across campus and conversations are happening to make campus more welcoming; on 4/7, classified staff will report their 90-day plan to managers for Caring Campus. 3/22 will be Classified Staff Day for professional development (with a focus on emotional intelligence and empathy, especially in support of students. They will also unveil new swag with classified professionals new district-wide logo at the event)! They are looking forward to 2nd annual First Gen College Day (forming workgroup soonemail Erlynne B). ADOPTION OF CONSENT CALENDAR ITEMS Curriculum Dan Walsh motioned to adopt the Consent Calendar Curriculum items, Jodie Caggiano seconded. The Academic Senate voted unanimously to adopt the Consent Calendar Curriculum items. OLD BUSINESS A. Approval of Faculty to sit on Committees No changes. Board Policies/Administrative Regulations Priority Registrationwhere do Promise Students fit in? Should it be called Early Registration, since it will be after the 5 Ed Code Priority Registration groups? Heidi, Dan and Efren will meet to discuss this further. Need further clarification on GPA (1.75 vs 2.0), since it could be very damaging for students. Question on EWit still has not been clarified whether the responsibility of the college falls on the faculty, Admissions or Counseling. Division feedback on P/NP change date: CS&SP would like it on the last day of instruction before finals (Ann-Marie Breslin reads statement expressing C&SP faculty unanimous support of keeping option to change to P/NP until last day of instruction to support student persistence, GPA, financial aid requirements, enrollment needs, and equity (especially for students juggling work and family responsibilities).Dan clarifies that in our district, the last day of class is after finals end. MSE: problematic to have date after finalscould we do 90% then so it would be before finals, since keeping the date after finals negatively impacts waitlisted students for next term and ultimately affects enrollment? Discussion about 75% to align with W date, versus closer to end of semester. Motion by Margot Lovett to synchronize P/NP date with W date (75% date of semester for course). Jodie Caggiano seconds. Unanimously passed. Curriculum Update Courses for Scheduled Review posted. Deans also were sent list yesterday (2/28). List of faculty trainings posted on Sharepoint. Due 4/30. D.E.I.A.A. Update Color Collective by Gabriel Nieves (LRC instructional asst): goal to incentivize Black and LatinX population to engage more with campus community and assist with academic success through tutoring, as well as create space where students can feel welcome. Food, activities and workshops happening! From Art to Authors inaugural event on Tu 3/7, featuring speakers Eric Jones (FAMT faculty) and Sarah Rafael Garcia (runs art gallery and bookstore in Santa Ana). Events planned with HSI and the WALL, and they will also have a symposium at the end of semester to support student work. Legislative Update Margot Lovett discusses CA auditors report about Full-Time hiring practices, with goal of 75% FON, which most colleges are not meeting; students still lack sufficient representation in their community college facultystate chancellors office recommends setting annual benchmark of appropriate target within 5 years (to ensure continuing to diversify and increase the percentage of courses taught by F-T). Questions about what this will mean in future. NEW BUSINESS A. SC Website and Marketing SC Website and Marketing (Jennie M): Rationale for updating site: needs to be easier to navigate, and there was too much content (over 9K PDFs and 17K unique webpagesnow only 2.5K with new site). Need for fully mobile, ADA compliant website with consistent content and tone. She went through process for redesign and all parties involved (iFactory hired 3/20, several stakeholder meetings, survey, website workgroup and student meetings). The site is no longer hosted on campus; an external vendor now manages it. Now working on Employee Directory and Faculty Bio pages: couldnt get it done before the 1/3 launch. Use the Marketing Request form if you need something or have a comment. Senator questions/comments: will Faculty Bios be public-facingyes. Students are having trouble accessing internal pages (listed as not found) and the Library Database is not user-friendly (too many clicks to get to the Library Databaseneeds to be more student-centered and featured on front page). Can Class Schedule also be on front page (thats our product, it should be featured front and center in red bar on top of home page). Other senators reiterated this (Library link so important for students in classes, needs to be easier to find). DSPSprospective students can no longer apply online (used to be very straightforward)they would like that feature back. The arrows to open up content are difficult to follow (requests for main page links). Student needs must be firstvery hard to find classes. Again, the multiple clicks necessary to get to Library Database were emphasized. More people agreed that Library and Class Schedule should be on top bar of home page. Compliment: nice that its actual student photos, not stock photos (and also, could we keep refreshing them to keep students and faculty in images current over the years). Faculty shared feedback from their current studentsthey feel like we only care about prospective students, we dont care about you. Chat Box doesnt work (Jennie says they are aware and are working on it, will be fixed soon). Uniformity is nice, but perhaps there does need to be more flexibility for some events and programs? Example given of workshop link to Page Not Found (links probably refer to old site reminder that we all need to check for broken links in Canvas at the start of each semester). Compliment on the search feature. Could there by a video (Why Saddleback?), and also perhaps think about having videos (meet the faculty, tour learning spaces)can Marketing help faculty to do this? (Jennie says: find 2-3 students to give testimonials and ask Randy and Matt in CTVR to set up time to film it for you. Convey fun, doing, and interactiveemail Jennie if you want to do this so she can help arrange it). How often will content on website be updated? Important that diversity is represented and integrated. Can ASG meet and provide list of concerns/questions in regards to website, so that current student needs can be better met? (ASG will do a survey, and Jennie will follow up with them.) Site looks good on a phone, is daunting on a larger computer (way too much scrolling and too many clicks). Jennie says the new site it is designed to support current students using Google to directly get to the info they want. Can we see more of the campus activities on the website, or is it really just for future students? (Jennie says it is designed for prospective studentsgoal is to make it easier for prospective students to find what they need). Comment that prospective students and the community should be able to easily find entertainment, art and athletic events held on campus. Problems with search feature (old site used Google, this one doesntthey are looking into ways to improve this). If not on this site, what is the place that all the info/events/etc. for current students should be? (Jennie is thinking about a Reddit or a Discord that can serve that purpose). ReOrg Next Steps Tram Vo-Kumamoto provided updates to changes which will be effective 7/1. Plans to return once a month to Senate to provide further updates. A slide from December OoI meeting with Charis and Deans was shared showing a timeline of Jan July 23; reporting hierarchy shifts may move earlier in some areas, and everyone will move by 7/1 (except faculty teaching in summer, who may make any needed transitions in August). On target for approval for new positions (3 new: Asst Dean for HSS, Operations Mgr in STEM to support labs, and Operations Mgr for AMPD)goal to post in March (up for 6 weeks), interview in May/June (would like faculty and staff to participate in hiring committees). Budgetary goal: no detriment to current programs, working with deans to ensure current program budgets can remain the same. Through this process, OoI has realized current process isnt optimal for deans, so in the future would like to make this easier for budgets and reporting (after Banner comes online). Parallel work to bring new budgets online for 7/1 while still using current budget. OoI realizes some transitions are not so clean (ex: Nutrition and Culinary Arts in different schools, having to reconfigure budgets for these programs). If space is available, would like to move faculty as close to their schools office as possible so that it is easier for them to get support and be in same proximity. Similarly, if classrooms can be moved closer, that is preferable (ex: ATAS spaceworking with faculty to move some into ATAS to be part of Business and Industry hub, and together in building; making changes to some classrooms there to fit 45 students). Faculty who teach large lecture courses will remain in BGS for their classes, since it is currently the only building capable of accommodating large lecture classes on campus. Economic Workforce Development will move to BGS, and some faculty from Humanities and Social Sciences will also move offices to BGS. Some HSS classrooms will be in the new Gateway building in future (ideal for new tech in buildings). Health and Wellness will also have some Gateway classrooms. We may rename buildings in future so they are more representative of schools (Cory Wathen, VPAS, will lead this through Resource Committee). Goal to get faculty boxes so that they can pack up and move when most convenient for them (towards end of spring or beginning of fall); plan to identify all room assignments for faculty offices before summer break (deans will be in charge of this, since they know needs of their faculty the best). If there are snags, next opportunity to make changes would be Dec (not in middle of semester). Facilities and IT are ready to go! Curriculum taxonomy updates are done, so everything is still on time; have already started scheduling meetings with areas that have programmatic changes/splitting between schoolsworking with chairs and deans currently for these programs (goal for clear timeline by end of spring, depending on faculty decisions). Questions/comments from Senators: Have official school names been determined, and where are they: answeron new website, click arrow open next to Programs and Degrees. Who will STEM Op Mgr report to: answerto the dean, may oversee lab techs (that is Art Nittas preference). STEM faculty would like to be involved (Tram agrees). When will Gateway be done: answerSpring 24. Where will some Math classes go: answerfloor one of LRC Instructor-level Equity Dashboard OPRA and EPA hosting 3/10 zoom session from 10 -11:30am; email has been sent and session will be recorded.
